But in a way, it also felt like a beginning of a new self-contained installment. Leviathan Falls continue from where Tiamat’s Wrath left off. “The love of a parent for their kid is the last thing to go.” Endings are hard to nail, and the authors should be proud of this achievement. Yes, this is the end, and it’s an emotional and satisfying conclusion. Corey duo is the first big space opera series ever finished to its completion. Comprising of nine novels and multiple short stories and novellas, The Expanse by James S.A. This is why this review is a new milestone for me. If you’ve been following my reading journey for a while, then you might realize that usually, the long series I finished are all epic fantasy series. My last review of 2021 is for the conclusion to the first big space opera series of novels I’ve ever finished to its completion, and I’m glad it’s The Expanse.Īnd so here we are, at the end of another long series. ![]()

7/8/2023 0 Comments 80 000 leagues under the sea![]() ![]() Jules Verne, however, is the man who gave those inventions life. It wasn’t Verne who peered into the future it was the men (and, one imagines or at least hopes, women) who designed futuristic inventions that would never get past the patent application process in their lifetime who saw the future. That Verne was quite the student of patent applications testifies to his scientific acumen which seems at times to be almost otherworldly in his ability peer into the future. If one were simply to judge Twenty Thousand Leagues Under the Sea based upon movies, TV shows, cartoons and comics, one would come away with a sense that the original novel is a goofy little bit of insane science fiction. Verne’s reputation among the English-speaking world has suffered as a result of twin engines of destruction: bad translations and even worse adaptations. ![]() What genre was it that so obsessed the peculiar reading interests of Mr. ![]() ![]() Of course, the same can be said of nearly every writer-and certainly positively every greater writer-but most writers do not pursue with such obsessive devotion one of the most unique genres of literature which was so instrumental in transforming Verne from hack to legend. One of the most telling-yet little known-characteristics about Jules Verne is that he was an inveterate reader. We are thankful for their contributions and encourage you to make your own. Is a giant evil slug crawling across a Takamatsu apartment an incarnation of Kafka’s father trying to enter the netherworld? The mythic motifs also remain frustratingly shady. The wartime X-File is revisited only once, the UFO is never explained, and the spectral village between the worlds serves little discernible function, beyond being a place for Kafka to escape to and then a place to escape from. She is tall, fat, Haitian, tattooed, and queer. Roxane Gay, like many women around the world, does not have the kind of body that follows the rules of society’s standards of feminine beauty. So if your body does not meet the particular standards of female beauty at any given time, you will be blamed for it. Someone, somewhere gets to decide what ‘perfection’ for the female form is, and in my general experience, women are usually the last ones to be asked about this. I distinctly remember being about seven or eight years old at my friend Amanda’s house playing dress-ups, when I thought to myself as I looked in the mirror, “Well at least I have skinny arms.” Women and girls, overtly and covertly teach each other how to judge and ridicule the bodies of others and their own bodies. Every woman and girl knows what it is like to have their body judged by not just the people around them, but also by themselves. ![]() ![]() ![]() MS: Yes, I was driving home from Gambier, Ohio, where I’d been co-teaching a workshop with Stanley Plumly at the Kenyon Review Writers Workshop, and I passed through Centerburg.
